Employment Opportunities

The City of Council Bluffs test for two entry level positions in the Fire Department, Firefighter\EMT-B and Firefighter\Paramedic. The processes for both these positions are similar. They include a written test with a minimum passing score, successful completion of the CPAT physical ability test, an oral interview and passing a medical and psychological exam which includes drug testing. Once the testing is completed and approved by the Civil Service board, the list of qualified applicants is kept for a period of two years or until such time that the entire list is called.

The current Civil Service hiring lists are effective until September 18, 2009 unless the list is depleted before that date.

Residency Requirement:

Employees of the Council Bluffs Fire Department must reside within the state of Iowa and in addition must reside within the following Iowa counties:

  • Pottawattamie County

  • Harrison County

  • Mills County

  • Montgomery County, on or west of County Highway M63

  • Shelby County

Newly hired employees must meet the residency requirements listed here within ninety (90) days of their date of hire.
